The Berlinale joins ICFR in calling on the Iranian government to immediately and unconditionally drop all charges against Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha and to restore their freedom of life, movement, and filmmaking. Moghadam and Sanaeeha are due to appear before Iran’s Revolutionary Court on 1 March 2025 for their Berlinale-awarded film “My Favourite Cake“, which was part of the festival's 2024 programme. Filmmakers Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha have been to the Berlinale several times. In 2024, they were unable to attend the premiere of their film due to a travel ban imposed on them for their film “My Favourite Cake“. The film’s continued success, including Berlinale’s award of the “Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique“, and Ecumenical Jury prizes as well as festival and cinema releases around the world, has not diminished the Iranian government's condemnation of Moghadam and Sanaeeha's actions. After months of interrogation and two years of travel bans, they are now due to appear in court. Festival director Tricia Tuttle has signed the petition on behalf of the Berlinale, along with many other industry luminaries. The Berlinale joins the ICFR in urging to amplify their call by signing and sharing this petition to the Iranian authorities to drop all charges now. Find all info here: https://lnkd.in/eZJkEZCH

February 13-23, 2025. One of the world's largest public film festivals & a crucial film industry forum.
About us
The Berlinale is a unique place of artistic exploration and entertainment. It is one of the largest public film festivals in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe each year. For the film industry and the media, the eleven days in February are also one of the most important events in the annual calendar and an indispensable trading forum. The Berlin International Film Festival enjoys an eventful history. The festival was created for the Berlin public in 1951, at the beginning of the Cold War, as a “showcase of the free world”. Shaped by the turbulent post-war period and the unique situation of a divided city, the Berlinale has developed into a place of intercultural exchange and a platform for the critical cinematic exploration of social issues. To this day it is considered the most political of all the major film festivals. The Berlinale brings the big stars of international cinema to Berlin and discovers new talents. It accompanies filmmakers of all disciplines on their paths into the spotlight and supports careers, projects, dreams, and visions. Thanks to its numerous industry initiatives, the Berlinale is a significant driver of innovation and an important economic factor internationally as well as for companies in Germany and Berlin. The 75th Berlin International Film Festival came to a successful close with the Berlinale Publikumstag (Audience Day) on February 23. After the festive Award Ceremony on Saturday evening, where “Dreams (Sex Love)” by Dag Johan Haugerud won the Golden Bear, thousands of viewers once again flocked to the cinemas on the Berlinale Publikumstag for catch-up screenings of films from the anniversary edition. Interest in the programme of the 75th Berlinale was very impressive among industry professionals and the public: Around 19,000 accredited professionals came to the festival and 336,000 tickets were sold to the public. “We were delighted with the results of the 75th anniversary edition. We have seen a positive response to our juries’ decisions, strong feedback on the improvements we made to our infrastructure, and also much excellent feedback on film and industry programmes. Additionally audience admissions were up on previous years. The spirit was high and with this energy we are already planning for 2026,” says Festival Director Tricia Tuttle.
