Diversity at the Berlinale

The advent of a more inclusive film industry constitutes one of this sector’s greatest structural challenges.

Promoting the plurality of voices and a more inclusive society has been a crucial part of the Berlinale’s legacy since its founding in 1951. This is reflected annually in the film programmes of the various sections and special series as well as in the initiatives and special events of the Berlinale. Indeed, inclusion is not solely concerned with the works of artists with a thematic focus on diversity; the composition of film crews and selection committees is also called into question.

The following public events, events accessible with accreditation and external events focussing on diversity will take place at the Berlinale in 2020:

New works and the video archive of Brazilian Indigenous filmmaker Patricia Ferreira Pará Yxapy reveal intimate, delicate and painful thoughts on the feminine, on spirituality, colonization, and the relationship to land.

How many different weapons does it take to fight? Accompanying the solo exhibition of Patricia Ferreira Pará Yxapy at SAVVY Contemporary which explores the Brazilian Indigenous filmmaker’s work through the archive of her audiovisual journey, a gathering around narrations and strategies of Indigenous filmmaking and storytelling will take place.

How can short filmmaking be used as a tool to build communities? How can the short form encourage conversations? In this panel discussion, Wapikoni – a travelling studio that trains First Nation, Metis and Inuit Peoples in Canada and facilitates their creation of audiovisual media – share their insights. The audience is invited to join the conversation with accounts of their own projects, initiatives and experiences.

Featuring Chilean filmmakers Claudia Huaiquimilla and Leo Pakarati and focussing on their most recent works as case studies, this conversation will frame the context in which these Indigenous cinematic voices have arisen and explore the ways in which the Indigenous communities seen onscreen were integrated off-screen in the production and distribution of their films.

"DocSalon Toolbox Programme"
With the “DocSalon Toolbox Programme”, “DocSalon” and the “EFM Diversity & Inclusion Initiative” are presenting a jointly developed pilot project that is specifically intended for international delegations of documentary creatives from underrepresented groups. Based on existing “DocSalon” formats, tailor-made workshops and one-on-one meetings, the programme aims to provide a tool kit of relevant industry and business know-how under the guidance of consultants and coordinators, while also providing numerous opportunities for exchange and targeted networking. The “DocSalon Toolbox Programme” is funded by the Goethe-Institut and receives additional support from Creative BC, the New Zealand Film Commission, SODEC, CMPA Canadian Media Producers Association and Téléfilm Canada.
