2024 Retrospective – “An Alternate Cinema – From the Deutsche Kinemathek Archives” Presents its Final Selection of Films

The Retrospective 2024 “An Alternate Cinema – From the Deutsche Kinemathek Archives” (see press release from Oct. 31, 2023) will showcase 21 features and two short films made between 1960 and 2000, with the selection encompassing narrative and documentary films, as well as mixed forms. The section will open at the Kino International on February 16, 2024 with Tobby (dir: Hansjürgen Pohland, FRG, 1961), a portrait of a jazz musician. The Retrospective will screen a broad spectrum of unconventional productions from the holdings of the Deutsche Kinemathek; films that tackle the issues of feminist-emancipation, the situation of migrants, a divided Germany, and upheaval in society, among other subjects. Two films will celebrate their world premiere in digitally restored versions – the documentary essay film Unsichtbare Tage oder Die Legende von den weissen Krokodilen (Invisible Days, dir: Eva Hiller, GER, 1991) and Bettina Flitner’s satirical short Ich (FRG, 1988).

To accompany the Retrospective 2024, the Deutsche Kinemathek will present its #7 streaming programme titled “On the Edge”, with nine films from its collection made outside of the mainstream production track that tell stories about people who live “differently” on the margins of society. Sometimes that unconventional existence is by choice, sometimes it is by circumstance, and it is reflected in cinematic language that explores new paths.
