Berlinale Goes Kiez 2025: A Declaration of Love to Neighbourhood Cinemas
Arthouse cinemas are firmly anchored in Berlin’s neighbourhoods. For over a hundred years they have been a meeting place for film lovers. Neighbourhood cinemas are unique in their diversity, history, programming and architecture. What they all have in common is their social function. As places of community and discourse, they contribute to understanding and empathetic interaction. They serve as a point of contact for people who engage with filmic narratives about the world. Audience discussions and cafés or pubs connected to cinemas enable a constant communal experience.
This is why Berlinale Goes Kiez is again focussing on neighbourhood cinemas for the upcoming 75th Berlinale. As a tribute to cinema and its film culture and socio-political programme, the festival aims to celebrate film and cinema in particular and pay tribute to the important work of cinema operators. From 15 to 21 February 2025, the special format will screen selected films from the 2025 Berlinale programme in seven neighbourhood cinemas, thus visiting audiences in their own area.
