When the Day Had no Name

In April 2012 the bodies of several Macedonian teenagers were found near a lake outside Skopje. Theirs is a story of a lost generation damaged by the social upheaval of the Balkans. Milan, Petar, Cvetan, Rape, Ace and Vladan are all teenagers just like any others. Their lives are characterised by dysfunctional families, money worries and their hopes for a better future. They decide to go on a fishing expedition. During the next 24 hours together, they get to know each other better and begin to let their masks drop. They toy with each other’s emotions, dance about to old pop songs, clash with some Albanians, put their sexual magnetism to the test – and search for a way to vent their lust for life in a frustrating society. Teona Strugar Mitevska has repeatedly taken part in the Panorama. Based on a true, as yet unsolved occurrence, her film provides a sensitive insight into the lives of a young generation that encapsulates the dynamics of a multi-ethnic country with a faltering economy. Cinematographer Agnès Godard’s captivatingly atmospheric images mirror the characters’ lack of orientation – in the trash and kitsch of annihilated values.
