A Kurdish refugee camp in the middle of a stony desert shortly before the American attack on Iraq. The refugee tents lying in between craters, burnt-out oil tanks and boxes of munitions are home to a 13-year-old boy who has lost his entire family. Known simply as “Satellite” in the camp because he always seems to know the latest news from US broadcasters, the boy hopes that by keeping abreast of the news he will be able to discover what the future of the camp will be.
Satellite’s interpretations of the situation in the world at large are not the only reason why he has acquired such an important position among the camp’s residents: the future, even the fate of the camp itself, seems to depend upon his prophesies. Understandably, Satellite feels that his role is often too much for him to handle at such a young age.
Many of the children in the camp earn a living by digging out land mines so that the fields can be cultivated again. One day, Satellite meets and falls in love with the 14-year-old Agrin, who already has a child. Agrin harbours a terrible secret. The imminent US attack and the affection Satellite bears for the world-weary Agrin prompt this 13-year-old to undertake an heroic mercy dash that could well cost him his life.
