El Camino de los Ingleses | Summer Rain by Antonio Banderas
ESP/GBR 2006, Panorama
Miguelito leaves hospital with a long scar, a copy of Dante's "Divine Comedy" - and a dream. Ever since reading this book, this 18-year-old's heart is set on becoming a writer. Summer is here and at first he spends his days with his friends at the open-air swimming pool. This is where he hangs out with martial arts fan Babirusa, rich kid Paco and Moratalla, the youngest of the group. Miguelito falls in love with Luli, who dreams of becoming a dancer. At the end of the summer Babirusa goes to London, where he learns that his mother is making a living as a dancer at a peepshow in Soho. Mean while Paco finds himself at loggerheads with his Dad, a dubious businessman. But in the end, he accepts his father's avaricious, power-hungry, swaggering approach to life. By the end of the long summer, Miguelito and Luli's love for one another has changed. Both of them have grown up.
Antonio Banderas: "The film touches on a process we must all go through (...): the passage from adolescence to adulthood. My dream was actually much smaller than what my life has become. I simply wanted to be a stage actor, not a movie star. Fortunately, I haven't lost the drive that led me to leave Málaga. I remember the exact moment when I realized that I had become someone else, that whatever happened, I would return to Málaga as a different person."
