Existentialist directing and acting duo Heinrich Hugenrubel and Franz Arnold’s films are a huge success in Germany on account of their nihilistic authenticity. The two men are destined for each other: the beast-like actor and his director, who builds him a stage-cum-cage and invites the viewer to partake in the spectacle of his ‘creature’. When the act goes Hollywood, they discover that they now have all kinds of facilities at their disposal. But, underneath all the extravagant sets and expensive mockups, do they still have that sense of authenticity that brought them fame in Germany?
