Charulata

It is 1880. Bhupati Dutt is rich, independent and influential: He is the very intellectual publisher and editor-in-chief of a political weekly in Calcutta. International politics interest him more than his private life. He knows that his wife Charu, who is artistically very talented, sensitive and interested in literature, suffers a lot from this situation. To remedy matters, he invites his brother-in-law Umapada and the latter’s wife, Mandakini, to stay at his house. During the holidays Bhupati's cousin Amal also joins the new circle. He alone understands Charu's emotional world. Their mutual understanding develops into a deep love. However, Amal doesn't want to abuse the confidence Bhupati places in him and decides to leave the house. Umapada has already gone – with embezzled money! Bhupati and Charu are now alone with their problems. They must make a new start and try to find a new path to one another.
