On September 5, 1972, in Munich, Palestinian terrorists attack the Israeli summer Olympic team, and eleven of them end up dead. A short time later, the Israeli secret service form a covert task force to liquidate eleven of those responsible for the massacre. At Prime Minister Golda Meir’s request, former bodyguard Avner Kaufman is named leader of the team of five specialists from around the world. Aided by German leftists, Avner makes contact with an informant in Paris, who exacts a high price for revealing the locations of the targets. But after several successful assassinations, Avner, a new father, starts to have doubts about the legitimacy of their mission, particularly when rival secret services put his crew in their crosshairs … For his adaptation of a controversial work of non-fiction, Spielberg insisted on artistic freedom in his depiction of historical details. The resulting action-packed thriller playing out across international locations raises political and moral questions. Above and beyond the Middle East conflict, through the individual tragedy of its main protagonist, Munich illustrates the more general ethical dilemmas that a well-fortified democracy can pose for its defenders.
