Represent, Represent: Youth Reclaiming the Margins
Featuring Lúcia Murat and Maja-Ajmia Yde Zellama, whose films Hora do recreio and Têtes Brûlées are part of this year’s Generation programme, this panel examines how both directors use subversive storytelling, aesthetics and music – particularly hip-hop – to challenge the white, classist gaze. Hora do recreio takes the perspective of BIPoC teenagers in Brazil, focusing on racial and gendered violence and blending real-life footage with dance and theatre. Têtes Brûlées tenderly portrays a young girl from Brussels coping with grief after losing her brother, without “othering” her Muslim family. In these films, marginalised young people reclaim their space with creativity, dignity and resilience. Hosted by Generation selection committee member Canan Turan.
