On account of his anti-fascist activities, writer, painter and doctor Carlo Levi was banned in 1935 by Mussolini’s regime to Aliano, a village in the mountainous region of Lucania in southern Italy, where he discovers a world that has been forgotten by time and history. “This, too, is the story of an investigation. But it is not a journalistic or a criminal investigation, as is so often in Rosi’s films, but rather an ethnological one. It is also the story of (…) the gradual shift in consciousness by an intellectual from the north, now abandoned in the wilderness.
