Julie is 33 when her husband, a well-known composer, and her daughter die in a car accident. In silent mourning, she leaves everything behind, puts the family home up for sale, and moves into an attic apartment in Paris. She only very gradually starts to live again, with her ability to take on responsibility growing – for a depressed neighbour who is an exotic dancer, for her husband’s work, which she attempts to complete jointly with his former collaborator. And, finally, for the unborn son of the dead man, whom she only finds out about when she is confronted with her husband’s pregnant mistress … This is the first in Kieślowski’s Colors trilogy about the famed values of the French Revolution. In the film, “liberty” is framed as emotional freedom, with Julie coming to understand that withdrawal is not a practical strategy for life, but a (childish) escape mechanism. Juliette Binoche won Best Actress at the 1993 Venice Film Festival for her portrayal of a wounded woman who makes the emotional journey from “freedom from” to “freedom to”.
